MIDWAY, Ky. - Still looking for its first win of the season, the Midway men's volleyball team was the victim of a reverse sweep at home Tuesday, losing 26-28, 21-25, 25-17, 25-18, 15-11 to Rio Grande in a River State Conference matchup at Marshall Gymnasium.
The Eagles overcame a 6-1 deficit in the opening set, then responded again after the Red Storm scored three straight to go ahead 25-24, pulling back ahead on back-to-back kills by
JT Kimball and
Luke Wallace.
The Red Storm fought off set point before two more successful attacks, this time by Wallace and
Jordan Daily, secured the opening-set win.
The Eagles closed strong again in set two, putting together a 5-1 run to take a 19-17 lead. The score would be tied again two more times, the last one at 20-20, but an attack error by Rio Grande started another 5-1 run to put the Eagles one set from victory.
While the Red Storm won the third set comfortably, the Eagles came out on fire in set four, jumping out to a 4-0 lead, a surge highlighted by back-to-back
Braden Cacek service aces.
But that was immediately answered by six-consecutive Red Storm points, as they never surrendered the lead again in the set.
Set five was more of the same, with Midway jumping out to a 5-2 lead, only for Rio Grand to respond.
The Eagles first gave up the lead on an Aevin Dotter kill that Rio Grande ahead 9-8. Midway tied it up again on a Daily kill, but the Red Storm held a 6-2 edge the rest of the way to clinch the come-from-behind victory.
Balance proved to be the biggest difference, as Rio Grande had four players record double-digit kills, with Mitch Bartecki (24) and Camilo Murillo (21) both topping 20 assists.
Noah Fichter had 20 assists for Midway, with
Jaden Alston leading the team with nine kills. Kimball added eight kills and five blocks and
Lincoln Anderson had 12 digs for 0-10 Midway, which is now 0-2 in the RSC.
The Eagles are back home for a non-conference match against Bluefield (Va.) at 5 p.m. Thursday.
