RICHMOND, Ky. - A late game stumble gave way to a walk-off win, as Midway baseball split a doubleheader with Indiana Tech Friday.
The Eagles gave up eight-unanswered runs after taking a five-run lead in the opener, losing 10-7, before a
Bradey LaGreca game-winning, two-out single proved to be the difference in a 3-2 win in the finale.
Initially meant to be played at Midway, the game was moved to Earle Combs Stadium on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, as the Eagles' home field is still being worked on following a recent winter storm.
GAME ONE: INDIANA TECH 10, MIDWAY 7
The Eagles appeared to be sitting pretty, as a five-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth inning broke a 2-2 tie. A
Noah Atherholt single started the scoring before two-run singles by
Pedro Morales and
Scott Kendrick made it 7-2 Midway.
Morales had two hits and two runs scored to go along with his two-RBI effort.
But the Warriors' rally began immediately in their ensuing at-bat, as they loaded the bases with nobody out via three-consecutive singles.
A Midway strikeout briefly curbed the momentum, but it was quickly regained by four-straight Tech hits. Things took a swift turn on a two-run double by Ben Morrison and RBI single by Brycen Hannah to make it 7-6.
Following a pitching change, Dane Richards tied the game with a single before Jack Ferguson put Tech ahead 8-7 on a sacrifice fly.
Morrison then added another RBI as part of a two-run seventh inning to seal the win for.
Colt Whaley added two hits and an RBI while LaGreca scored two runs in defeat for Midway.
GAME TWO: MIDWAY 3, INDIANA TECH 2
After Indiana Tech rallied to tie the score 2-2 in the sixth inning, LaGreca ended a great day in heroic fashion.
Following a one-out
Mark Harmon Jr. walk, pinch-runner
Logan Janiszewski got into scoring position with two outs on a stolen base. He then came home for the decisive run when LaGreca singled between short and third base.
LaGreca also got the scoring started for Midway in the bottom of the third inning, first with an RBI double, then by scoring on a Morales single.
Two Midway pitchers combined to allow just four hits.
Nathan McKissick gave up three hits and a run with three strikeouts in five innings, while
Chance Todd got the win after surrendering an unearned run in two innings of relief.
Now 3-3 on the season, the Eagles will look to earn a series win against the Warriors at noon tomorrow. That game will also be played at Earle Combs Stadium.
