MIDWAY, Ky. - Brescia got a go-ahead two-run single in the seventh inning and ran away for a 9-3 win over Midway in the opening game of the River States Conference baseball season on Friday.
The Eagles had pulled even at 2-2 in the previous at-bat, when
Scott Kendrick drove in
Pedro Morales with a single in the sixth inning.
The Bearcats put the first two runners on in the top of the seventh, but it looked as if the Eagles might escape unscathed when
Jose Aviles retired the next two batters. But Miguel Marcos, who homered in the previous inning, lifted a ball to right field, bringing home two go-ahead runs.
The Eagles got a run back on a
Cole Ginter single in the bottom of the inning, but after Brescia scored again in the eighth, it added four more runs in the top of the ninth, the last three of which came with two outs.
Ginter had a great game at the plate, going 3-for-5 to up his batting average to .529 on the season. Morales added two hits and two runs scored, the first of which came on a second-inning sacrifice fly by
Alex Scoular.
Friday marked just the third time the Eagles, who are now 8-5 overall, lost an RSC opener in 10 years as a program. It was also just their second loss in 14 home games against the Bearcats.
The two teams will face off again in a doubleheader in Midway on Saturday, with game one starting a noon.
