Eagles win opening RSC series, sweep doubleheader with Brescia

MIDWAY, Ky. - After a loss to open River States Conference play Friday, Midway responded with a doubleheader sweep of Brescia Saturday to secure a win in the first RSC series of 2026.

The Eagles benefited from a pair of Bearcat errors, scoring three times in the eighth inning of a 5-3 win in the opener, before riding great pitching to a 4-1 win in the finale.

GAME ONE: MIDWAY 5, BRESCIA 3

After plating a pair of runs in the first inning, the Eagles were held scoreless in their ensuing six at-bats, leaving 10 runners on base in the process. This allowed Brescia to take a 3-2 lead.

But after Noah Atherholt led off the eighth with a double, Alex Scoular laid down a perfect bunt for a single. Midway's fortunes got even better as a throw by third baseman Hayden Jones to first sailed high, allowing Atherholt to tie the score.

After not committing any errors in the first fifteen-and-two-thirds innings of the series, Brescia committed three in the span of five batters, the last of which moved Scoular to third base on an errant pick off attempt.

Then, following a pair of walks, Scoular would score the go-ahead run off the bat of Bradey LaGreca, who had his second game-winning RBI of the season via a sacrifice fly. Midway would add another run when Taylor Voorhees was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Eagles finished with a 10-4 hit advantage with Atherholt, Scoular, Voorhees and Cole Ginter all having two hits.

Tyler Pyles allowed just one earned run and three hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts. Ashton Blair got the win by working a 1-2-3 eighth while Brenden Cole got the save by striking out the side in the ninth.

GAME TWO: MIDWAY 4, BRESCIA 1

An early error put the Eagles behind 1-0 in the top of the third, but that would be the only offense the Bearcats would muster against Eagle pitchers Nathan McKissick and Grant Stone.

McKissick struck out five while allowing just three hits and one walk in four innings, improving his record to 2-1. Then, in three innings of relief, Grant Stone allowed just two hits. Stone has thrown 13 innings this season and has yet to allow a run.

Offensively, the Eagles responded to Brescia's third-inning run by scoring twice in the bottom half to take the lead.

Pinch-runner Logan Janiszewski scored on a wild pitch before Pedro Morales drove in his team-best 14th run with a double.

Midway would add two more runs in the fifth inning, the first on the first collegiate home run by catcher Isaac Tencza, the second on another Brescia error.

Ginter, LaGreca and Morales all had two hits, with Ginter running his batting average to .565 on the season.

The Eagles, who have never lost back-to-back games to open RSC play, are 10-5 overall and will host defending league champion Oakland City in a three-game series next weekend.

Prior to that, they will stay in-state for a road game against Union Commonwealth University in Barbourville Tuesday at 2 p.m.
