Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Hughes, defense spark another dominant home win for Midway women's basketball

MIDWAY, Ky. - A'Lyrica Hughes had the best all-around individual game a Midway player had all season and the Eagles upped their win streak to eight in a row with an 89-67 triumph over Indiana East in River States Conference women's basketball play Tuesday.

Like they did in their previous game against Indiana Southeast on Saturday, the Eagles gave up the first points of the night before taking the lead for good, this time via an 8-0 run.

Midway is now 10-0 at home this season. In those games, the Eagles have trailed for just 3 minutes, 19 seconds and never by more than two points.

With leading scorer Alexys Moore sidelined, Hughes easily filled the void with a near quadruple-double performance. The sophomore from Owensboro had 22 points while also adding eight assists, eight steals and seven rebounds.

Hughes now has an RSC-best 72 steals this season and helped the Eagles force 27 turnovers Tuesday, marking the 18th time they've forced 20-or-more turnovers in a game this season.

She had plenty of help on the offensive end, with Jermyra Christian scoring a season-best 19 points and Jacie Chesser adding 12 points and six rebounds.

Midway improves to 17-5 overall and 8-2 in the RSC. With their win, it moved into second in the East Division, as Shawnee State fell to 8-3 with a 90-84 loss to Rio Grande Tuesday.

The Eagles now trail only the 9-0 Red Storm in the standings. Midway still has home games against Rio Grande (Feb. 12) and Shawnee State (Feb. 21) this season.

Before the showdown with Rio, they have a pair of road games, starting with a 1 p.m. Saturday tilt at Indiana Kokomo.
