Midway Baseball drops pair of close games on opening day

HENDERSON, Tenn. -- After having their originally scheduled season opener cancelled due to inclement weather, the Midway baseball team finally got its season underway on Saturday in Henderson, Tennessee.

It was a tough opening day for the Eagles as they dropped a 7-6 decision to Saint Francis (Ind.) in game one before suffering a 4-2 loss to Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) in the nightcap.

Game 1: Saint Francis 7, Midway 6

The Cougars (1-1) got on the board first, scoring one in the first and three in the fourth before Midway finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth. They scored the next three innings with two in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one in the sixth.

Charles Voorhees doubled home a run and Noah Atherholt reached on a bases loaded walk to cut the deficit in half in the fourth. The fifth saw Midway score a pair on an error before Scott Kendrick scored on a wild pitch giving Midway a 5-4 edge. Then, in the sixth, Alex Scoular pushed Midway's lead to 6-4 following a sacrifice fly.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, their lead wouldn't stand. The Cougars loaded the bases and were down to their final strike before Zavier Nolan ripped a double to left clearing the bases and giving his team a 7-6 victory.

On the bump for the Eagles, Ethan Ianni got the start and tossed three innings allowing one run with four punchouts. Brady Binder pitched 2.1 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, while Brenden Cole was handed the loss allowing three runs in his one inning of work.

Game 2: Freed-Hardeman 4, Midway 2

The nightcap saw missed opportunities come back to haunt the Eagles after leaving six runners on base. They got a runner to third base in each of the first three innings but failed to push a run across.

On the contrary, the Lions (2-0) took advantage of their opportunities, scoring three in the first. That lead would stand until the fifth, when Midway scored two runs on three hits. Sodai Takanaga and Pedro Morales each singled and each scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.

In the bottom half of the fifth, Freed-Hardeman extended their lead to 4-2 after Trace Anderson blasted a solo home run to right. Trailing 4-2, Midway wouldn't go away after putting the tying run in scoring position in the seventh.

Takanaga led off the inning with a single and Morales followed with a one-out double. With runners at second and third and one out, the Lions got back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat and seal the 4-2 victory.

Nathan McKissick got the start for the Eagles and pitched four innings, allowing three runs on three hits. Landon Heim tossed the final two innings and allowed one run on one hit.
