HENDERSON, Tenn. -- After suffering a pair of close losses the day before, the Midway baseball team bounced back Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader against Saint Francis (Ind.) and Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) at Five Wells Field.
The Eagles opened the day with a 4-2 victory over Saint Francis before hanging on for a 6-5 victory over the Lions in the nightcap.
Following the weekend,
Luther Bramblett's squad improved to 2-2 on the season. The Eagles will have the next few days off before returning to the diamond next weekend. Midway is currently scheduled to host Indiana Tech for a three-game series Feb. 14-15.
Game 1: Midway 4, Saint Francis 2
The Eagles pounced on the Cougars (1-3) early, scoring two runs in the first followed by single runs in the second and third innings. In the first,
Noah Atherholt singled and later scored on an error, while
Pedro Morales also came around to score on an error.
The second saw
Scott Kendrick open the inning with a bang. The junior from Lexington, Ky., blasted a solo home run to left field, pushing the lead to 3-0. In the third inning,
Sodai Takanaga opened the frame with a double and later scored on a wild pitch.
The four-run cushion was more than enough for Midway's trio on the mound.
Tyler Pyles (1-0) got the start and pitched four strong innings, allowing one run on two hits while recording a career-high eight strikeouts.
Jose Aviles then pitched 1.2 innings and allowed one run on three hits, while
Chance Todd recorded the final four outs to earn his first save of the season.
Game 2: Midway 6, Freed-Hardeman 5
Like they did in the opener, the Eagles struck first, scoring one run in the second and two in the fourth.
Charles Voorhees had an RBI double in the second, while Kendrick added a two-run single in the fourth to give Midway a 3-0 lead.
The Lions (3-1) scored a pair of runs in the fifth, but Midway immediately answered with three runs in the sixth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Morales stepped to the plate and delivered a bases-clearing double, extending Midway's lead to 6-2.
After a 1-2-3 bottom of the sixth, Freed-Hardeman made things interesting in its final at-bat. The Lions cut Midway's lead to 6-5 and had the tying run at second base, but
Matthew Poe induced Brennen Gibson to fly out to end the game, sealing the 6-5 victory.
The Eagles got another strong pitching performance, this time from
Grant Stone (1-0). The senior right-hander pitched four scoreless innings, scattering three hits while striking out eight.
Luke Richardson followed with one inning of relief, while Poe tossed the final two innings.
