Midway baseball pulls away for series opening win against IUC

COLUMBUS, Ind. - The Midway baseball team used a big fifth inning to take control and defeat Indiana University Columbus 9-3 on the road in a River States Conference game Friday.

The Crimson Pride struck first in the fourth inning, scoring three runs to take an early lead. The Eagles quickly responded at the top of the fifth, putting together a five-run inning that shifted the momentum.

The scoring started with a two-run triple by Bradey LaGreca, who then scored the tying run on a wild pitch. The Eagles then took the lead on a Colt Whaley double before adding another run on a wild pitch.

Midway scored again in the sixth inning to extend the lead before pulling away late. The Eagles plated three runs in the ninth inning, the first two on a Scott Kendrick double, the last on a Noah Atherholt single.

The Eagles finished the game with 10 hits while holding Indiana Columbus to just three. LaGreca, Taylor Voorhees and Alex Scoular all had two hits, with Scoular and Whaely both scoring two runs.

On the mound, Grant Stone earned the win with an impressive relief appearance. Stone tossed five scoreless innings, allowing no hits while striking out four batters and walking two.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 15-6 with a 5-2 record in conference play.

This is by far the quickest Midway has ever reached 15 wins in a season. Previoulsy, the fastest time an Eagle team reached that mark was on March 23 in both 2018 and 2019.

Midway will stay in Columbus for a doubleheader. On Saturday, the first game starts at noon.
