COLUMBUS, Ind. -- The Midway baseball team completed its second series sweep of the season — and its first River States Conference series sweep of the year — on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of IU Columbus (Ind.).
In the opener, Midway jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 4-2 victory. The Eagles then received a complete-game shutout from
Nathan McKissick in the nightcap, earning a 6-0 win to complete the series sweep.
With the victories,
Luther Bramblett's squad continued the best start in program history, improving to 17-6 overall and 7-2 in conference play. The Eagles are scheduled to return to action Tuesday (March 17) when they travel to Campbellsville (Ky.) for a midweek matchup.
GAME ONE: Midway 4, IU Columbus 2
Midway struck first, scoring a run in the first inning and two more in the second.
Colt Whaley delivered an RBI double in the first before
Max Jewusiak drove in a run in the second.
Alex Scoular, who singled earlier in the inning, later came around to score on an error to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
The early run support appeared to be more than enough for Midway left-hander
Tyler Pyles, who cruised through the first five innings before running into trouble in the sixth. The southpaw retired the first 11 batters he faced before allowing a two-out single in the fourth.
The Crimson Pride (4-21, 0-9 RSC) got on the board with a leadoff home run from Ty Nicholson in the sixth and later added a sacrifice fly from Gavin Lash to cut Midway's lead to 3-2.
That would be as close as IU Columbus would get. The Eagles added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single by
Noah Atherholt to make the final score 4-2.
On the mound, Pyles earned the win and improved to 5-0 on the season. He pitched six innings, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out seven.
Luke Richardson tossed two scoreless innings with four strikeouts, while
Brenden Cole recorded his third save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.
GAME TWO: Midway 6, IU Columbus 0
The nightcap saw
Nathan McKissick deliver his best pitching performance of the season. The junior right-hander threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits while striking out eight.
McKissick, who improved to 3-1 with the win, received plenty of support from the Midway offense, which scored three runs in the second inning, one in the sixth, and two more in the seventh.
In the second inning,
Mark Harmon Jr. hit a two-run single before
Pedro Morales added an RBI single that scored
Logan Janiszewski, the courtesy runner for Harmon. Morales added another RBI single in the sixth.
The two runs in the seventh came on a sacrifice fly from Scoular and an RBI double from Jewusiak.
Offensively, Midway collected 14 hits and had five players record multi-hit games, including
Bradey LaGreca, Morales,
Taylor Voorhees, Atherholt, and Jewusiak.
