GRAYSON, Ky. - With some help from a sloppy Kentucky Christian defense and a big hit by
Max Jewusiak, the Midway baseball team was able to make a stunning, four-run rally in the ninth inning to tie a program record with a seventh-consecutive win by the final of 10-9 Friday.
Up 6-2 at one point, the Eagles had surrendered seven straight runs across the sixth and seventh innings and were trailing 9-6 going into their final at-bat.
Things started promisingly when an error and hit batter put the first two men on, but hope seemed to fizzle when the next two batters were retired.Â
Noah Atherholt was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, but defeat seemed imminent when pinch-hitter
Scott Kendrick hit a ground ball to short stop. But another KCU error allowed
Pedro Morales and
Alex Scoular to score to cut the deficit to 9-8.
That then paved the way for Jewusiak, who hit a 2-2 pitch into deep right field, which dropped in to allow two runs to score. This was the only hit Midway recorded in the four-run inning.
Brenden Cole then came in to work a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth, striking out the last two batters to move Midway to 18-6 overall with an 8-2 record in the River States Conference.
It also equals the longest win streak by an Eagle team, the previous stretch going from March 23 to April 2, 2017.
Leading the charge for most of the day was the duo of
Colt Whaley and
Taylor Voorhees, who both had two runs, two hits and two RBIs. The pair got the Eagles on the board with back-to-back home runs in the third inning.
Mahrlon Torres also had two doubles, one of which drove in a sixth-inning run, with Morales also scoring twice.
The Eagles will look to set a new consecutive-win record outright when they return to Kentucky Christian for a doubleheader Saturday. Game one is set to begin at noon.
