MIDWAY, Ky. - Being out of action for a month didn't seem to make the Midway men's tennis team rusty, as the Eagles didn't drop a single set in a 7-0 win over Indiana Southeast in the River States Conference opener Friday.
The tightest battle in doubles came at the No. 1 spot, where
Ricardo Starosta and
Mudiwa Munyimani won 6-4 over Trey Gutgsell and Brennan Cooper.Â
Elsewhere,
Ferran Clapes Ballart and
Manuel Mirabal won 6-3 against Elijah Brosmer and DJ Hall at No. 2, with
Shimpei Yazuka and
Aleksey Granitsa beating Jacob Campbell and Paxton Evitts 6-2 at No. 3.
Gutgsell had a much easier time at No. 1 singles, where he won a pair of 6-0 sets over Gutgsell. Clapes was nearly as dominant at No. 2, winning 6-1, 6-1 against Evitts.
Munyimani (6-4, 6-2 over Brosmer), Yazuka (6-1, 6-2 over Hall) and Mirabal (6-2, 6-4 over Cooper) all earned straight-set singles wins at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 respectively, while
Tyler Fox was also victorious at No. 6, beating Grayson Squires 6-2, 6-3.
This was just the second match of the spring for Midway, and its first since exactly one month ago,
which was a 5-2 loss to Thomas More.
The Eagles will have a quick turnaround, as they travel to Owensboro for another RSC matchup against Brescia at noon on Saturday.
