MIDWAY, Ky. - The Midway men's volleyball team set season-best marks in multiple categories, but it wasn't enough to secure a win, as Defiance (Ohio) pulled away in the fifth set to top the Eagles 27-25, 16-25, 25-19, 22-25, 15-10 on Friday.
The Eagles, who had two set-point opportunities in the opening set, dominated the second and looked primed to secure a come-from-behind win.
Midway closed the fourth set on a 3-0 run, which ended on a
JT Kimball kill. It then put together a 4-0 run and a 7-4 lead in set five, a rally punctuated by back-to-back
Lars Ketelaars service aces.
But the Yellow Jackets were able to put together a 4-0 run of their own to re-take the lead 8-7. The teams would then trade points to get to 9-9 before Defiance again scored four-consecutive points to put the match away.
In defeat, the Eagles had a season-best 53 kills and 0.269 hitting percentage, with Kimball and Ketelaars both recording 16 kills. They were set up by
Noah Fichter, whose 28 assists are the most by a Midway player this season.
Midway also had a season-high 18 blocks and eight aces. Kimball (five), Ketelaars (four) and
Luke Wallace (four) led the way in blocks with Ketelaars leading all players with three aces.
Now 2-16 on the season, the Eagles are back home for a River States Conference match against Oakland City (Ind.) at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
