MIDWAY, Ky. - Out of action a full month and battling brutal, relentless winds, the Midway women's tennis team was able to gut it out against Indiana Southeast at home on Friday, opening River States Conference play with a 4-3 win.
Freshman
Emma Pheiffer played a critical role in helping the Eagles clinch the doubles point before she ultimately locked up the match in singles.
Pheiffer and
Alicia Sanglas Sanglas survived a 7-5 tie-breaker against Libby Baent and Kate Halbig at No. 1 doubles, securing a 1-0 lead for the Eagles in the match.
Then, at No. 2 singles, Pheiffer took control of the third set against Maci Vaughn, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 for what proved to be the clinching point.
Sanglas Sanglas had an easier go at No. 1 singles, defeating Banet 6-2, 6-1.
Tanit Cevada Cruz also had a perfect day. She and
Raigan Allbert beat Vaughn and Eva Ellis 7-5 at No. 2 doubles, before Cruz defeated Halbig 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
Friday marked the first time the Eagles took the court
since a Feb. 15 loss to Thomas More. After two previous matches were postponed, weather was a major issue again, with winds exceeding 40 miles per-hour at points
Now 1-1 overall, Midway will look to improve to 2-0 in RSC play Saturday when it travels to Owensboro to face Brescia at noon.
