PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - Midway let a late lead slip away in the opener, then fell in an immediate 9-0 hole in game two, dropping both games of a road, River States Conference softball doubleheader to Shawnee State Saturday.
The Eagles were four outs away from winning the opener before falling 3-2, then were run-ruled 11-3 in the second game.
GAME ONE: SHAWNEE STATE 3, MIDWAY 2
The Eagles benefited from a two-out error in the top of the fifth inning, which paved the way for a two-out RBI single by
Molly Wooldridge to give them a 2-1 lead.
The Midway defense then escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the bottom of the fifth, when a line drive to shortstop
Madison Hill turned into an inning-ending double play.
Then, after the first two batters reached in the sixth, an identical play happened, with this double play getting Midway one out away from another escape.
The Eagles wouldn't be as fortunate this time. Following a walk, a Kennedy Davis single to left field was compounded by an error that allowed two runners came home for the go-ahead runs.
Randi Delong, who had two hits, gave Midway a chance with a two-out double in the top of the seventh, but Shawnee starter Abbie Deeds finished a complete-game performance by forcing a game-ending flyout.
Alli Jones had a quality start in the loss, allowing just one run on six hits over five innings.
GAME TWO: SHAWNEE STATE 11, MIDWAY 3
The Bears came out on fire with a four-run first inning, then scored five more times in the second, the surge ending on a three-run Keegan Uhl home run.
Delong had another big game, driving in all three Eagle runs. The first came on a single in the third inning with the last two coming around on a fifth-inning home run, her fifth of the season.
The Eagles fall to 4-12 overall and 3-5 in the RSC. They will take a break from conference play with a road doubleheader at Georgetown on Wednesday, with game one set to begin at 2 p.m.
