COLUMBUS, Ind. - Every time Midway put together a rally, Indiana Columbus countered with a bigger one, as the Crimson Pride swept a River States Conference doubleheader with wins of 12-7 and 14-6 Friday.
GAME ONE: IU COLUMBUS 12, MIDWAY 7
Randi Delong drove in five runs in the opener, with four of them coming on what appeared to be a momentum-shifting, two-out grand slam to put Midway ahead 6-5 in the top of the fifth.
It was the sixth home run of the season for Delong, who also had an RBI double in the seventh. She has driven in three-or-more runs four times this season.
Unfortunately for Midway, the Crimson Pride found some late-inning magic of their own in the bottom of the fifth, scoring six runs, all with two outs.
IUC took the lead on a three-run double by Lex Heafner then ended the output with a two-run Carli Hosler home run.
There were three home runs hit in the first game, the other a two-run shot by Midway's
Karington Briscoe in the third inning.
Molly Wooldridge also had two hits while
Diamond Wills scored three runs for the Eagles.
GAME TWO: IU COLUMBUS 14, MIDWAY 6 (6 INNINGS)
A run-rule outcome looked unlikely after a five-run top-of-the-fifth inning performance had Midway in a 6-6 tie. Three of those runs came off of doubles by
Jayden Timmermans and Wills, with Wills' hit bringing in two to tie the score.
But it took just two batters for IUC to take back the lead, as a Mackenzie Matern single was followed by a two-run Mallory Shelton home run.
Midway didn't make things easier on itself, committing five errors, four of which led directly to Columbus runs.
Delong had another great game in defeat, going 2-for-3 with a walk.
The Eagles fall to 4-14 overall with a 3-7 mark in the RSC. They stay in Indiana to face fellow conference foe Oakland City in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.
