EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Midway couldn't complete major comeback in game two of a softball doubleheader Saturday, with the Eagles ultimately being swept by River States Conference opponent Oakland City.
The Eagles lost the opener 9-2, then scored five-unanswered runs to take a 10th-inning lead in the second game, only for the Mighty Oaks to score twice in the inning's bottom half to win 6-5.
GAME ONE: OAKLAND CITY 9, MIDWAY 2
Randi Delong, who entered the day leading the RSC with six home runs, got the scoring started with a sacrifice fly that scored
Madison Hill in the top of the first inning.
But, as was the case
in a Friday doubleheader at Indiana Columbus, the opponent had a big-time answer, as the Mighty Oaks batted around and scored five runs in the bottom of the frame.
The Eagles, who were out-hit 14-5, got their other run courtesy of a
Diamond Wills triple in the fifth inning.
GAME TWO: OAKLAND CITY 6, MIDWAY 5 (10 INNINGS)
After surrendering four Oakland City runs in the bottom of the second, the Eagle offense came to life with a four-run fifth to tie the game.
Delong, who now has six multi-RBI games during her freshman season, cut the deficit in half with a two-run double. After
Karington Briscoe scored on a wild pitch, Delong was then driven home on another double by
Molly Wooldridge.
The score remained the same for five innings before the Eagles, who'd left runners in scoring position in each of their previous three at-bats, took a 5-4 lead thanks to the first collegiate home run by freshman
Ella Baum.
But a Mighty Oak offense that had been held scoreless in seven-straight innings found a spark in the 10th, scoring twice before the Eagles recorded an out. After opening the inning with three-straight singles, Hannah Wissel ended the game with a two-run double.
Delong, Wills, Briscoe and Wooldridge all had two hits in the second game.
After putting together a four-wins-in-five-games streak, Midway has dropped eight in a row, falling to 4-16 overall with a 3-9 conference record.
Weather permitting, the Eagles will play on their home field for the first time all season, where they have three RSC series scheduled next week. The first is a slated doubleheader with Saint Mary of the Woods on Tuesday, with the opening game starting at 2 p.m.
