TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Midway played two highly competitive sets but ultimately lost in three, 25-23, 25-23, 25-13 to River States Conference opponent Saint Mary of the Woods on Saturday.
Down by as many as seven in the first set, the Eagles battled back, fighting off four set points to cut the deficit to 24-23 on a
Luke Wallace ace before a service error finally clinched the win for the Pomeroys.
Set two was even more competitive, as neither team led by more than two at any point. Of the 48 points played, 39 took place with the score either tied or at a one-point margin.Â
Midway was two points from evening the match, taking a 23-21 lead on a service error. Unfortunately, Saint Mary of the Woods responded with the biggest run of the set, scoring the final four points to earn another two-point win.
The third set was tight for awhile, with the Eagles even taking a 6-4 lead on a
Braden Cacek service ace, before the Pomeroys proceeded to score the next five points and they would keep the lead the rest of the way.
The highlight of the match for Midway was a six-block performance by
JT Kimball.
Lars Ketelaars led the team with six kills, while Cacek and
Lincoln Anderson both had six digs.
Now 2-19 overall with an 0-9 mark in the RSC, the Eagles travel to Rio Grande (Ohio) for a 7 p.m. match on Tuesday.
