KOKOMO, Ind. - After allowing just one hit through eight innings, Midway saw a win slip away as a walk-off, three-run Max French home run lifted Indiana Kokomo to a 4-3 win over the Eagles in the first game of the River States Baseball Series of the Week Friday.
Making his first start at Midway,
Xavier Hart allowed just one unearned run and one hit in five innings of work, striking out three batters with no walks.
Reliever
Grant Stone did have a pair of walks in his first three innings but didn't surrender any hits and even got out of a major jam in the sixth recording, a double play after the first two batters reached then getting a strikeout once another runner reached third.
The Eagles entered the ninth inning with a 3-1 lead. Midway scored runs on a
Taylor Voorhees double and
Noah Atherholt sacrifice fly in the second inning and a
Max Jewusiak single in the sixth.
But after the first IUK batter was retired in the ninth, the next two reached on a single and walk, which set the stage for French, was blasted an opposite-field, three-run shot for the walk-off win.
Atherholt and
Colt Whaley both had two hits for the Eagles, who have lost three straight after winning their previous eight games.
Still 19-9 overall with a 9-4 mark in the RSC, Midway looks to rebound with a series-closing doubleheader in Kokomo Saturday, with game one beginning at noon.
