Midway Baseball suffers series sweep at IU Kokomo

KOKOMO, Ind. -- After suffering a heartbreaking defeat on Friday, the Midway baseball team wrapped up their three-game series against IU Kokomo (Ind.) with a doubleheader on Saturday in the River States Conference Series of the Week.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, Saturday didn't get much better. The opener saw the Cougars win a 7-6 decision on a walk-off single in 11 innings before they completed the series sweep with a 2-0 shutout victory in the series finale.

Following the weekend, the Eagles slip to 19-11 overall and 9-6 in league play. They are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday when they host Union Commonwealth (Ky.) at 3 p.m. ET at Tracy Farmer – Don Ball Stadium.

GAME ONE: IU Kokomo 7, Midway 6 (11 Innings)

Midway trailed 4-2 after five innings but scored three runs with two outs in the sixth. Alex Scoular stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered a two-run single to tie the game before Grant Stone – who was hit earlier in the inning – scored on a wild pitch to give his team a 5-4 lead.

The Eagles would take the lead into the ninth, but a one-out home run by Rodney Rachel tied the game and sent it to extras.

After neither team scored in the 10th, Isaac Tencza broke the tie in the 11th with a leadoff solo home run as Midway regained a 6-5 advantage.

The lead, however, was short lived after IU Kokomo answered with a pair of runs. A leadoff walk, a double, and an intentional walk loaded the bases with no outs. A wild pitch scored the tying run before Noah Wolf hit a walk-off single lifting the Cougars to a 7-6 victory.

Brenden Cole (0-2) was dealt the loss allowing three runs on three hits in his two innings of work. Tyler Pyles got the start and pitched 4.2 innings allowing four runs on five hits. Chance Todd (2.1 innings) and Ashton Blair (1.0 innings) each had scoreless outings in the loss.

GAME TWO: IU Kokomo 2, Midway 0

The series finale featured many missed opportunities for both teams after neither team scored through the first five innings. Each team had runners in scoring position in the opening inning, but neither were able to push across a run.

The two teams combined to leave 19 runners on base as the scoreless tie would last until the sixth when IU Kokomo scored a pair of runs that would be the eventual game-winning runs in the 2-0 victory.

Nathan McKissick (3-3) got the start was the handed the loss after allowing two runs – one earned – on four hits in his 5.2 innings of work. He also struck out six in the loss.
