Midway baseball starts fast, holds off Union to end losing streak

MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway returned home for the first time in 31 days and was able to snap a five-game losing streak in the process, jumping out to an 8-0 lead and holding off a Union Commonwealth rally in what became a 10-8, non-conference baseball win Tuesday.

Playing at Tracy Farmer - Don Ball Stadium for the first time since hosting Brescia on Feb. 28, the Eagles were greeted with a heavy, outward blowing wind and took immediate advantage when Alex Scoular led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run.

They added four more runs, all with two outs, before the inning concluded, thanks to Taylor Voorhees and Isaac Tencza RBI singles and a two-run Bulldog error.

The rout appeared to be on as the lead stretched to 8-0 after two innings. Two more Union errors accounted for two runs, with another coming on a Colt Whaley single.

But a Bulldog team that had lost 23 of its previous 24 games coming in didn't let Midway run away with things. After scoring a run in the fourth inning, Union put its first five runners on in the fifth, eventually batting around and scoring five times to make it an 8-6 game.

The Eagles took the momentum back in the bottom of the inning on a two-run Max Jewusiak home run, but Union rallied again, scoring twice in the seventh to cut the lead to 10-8.

Still down two runs in the ninth inning, a pair of walks allowed Union to bring the go-ahead run to the plate in pinch-hitter Nate Adkins.

But the Eagles countered that substitution with one of their own, as reliever Ashton Blair came in and struck out Adkins on three pitches to get the save and earn Midway its 20th win of the season.

Starter Jose Aviles was strong in four innings, allowing just five hits and one run with five strikeouts and no walks.

Nine different players accounted for Midway's nine hits, with Bradey LaGreca scoring a team-high two runs.

The Eagles have a quick turnaround, as they travel to face Campbellsville at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
