CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Midway withstood the struggles of a lengthy rain delay, but was unable to stop a late Campbellsville rally, as the Tigers scored six unanswered runs to top the Eagles 8-7 in 10 innings in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday.
The Eagles were rolling early, thanks to a four-run third inning and four innings of no-hit ball by
Carter Ross, who allowed just three base runners in that time.
Ross' day would end prematurely though, as a rain storm would delay the game for an extended period. When play resumed, the Tigers got within 4-2 on a two-run Brady Henke single in the fifth.
But the Eagles quickly responded with three runs in their following at-bat, the first two on a
Mark Harmon Jr. RBI single, the third on an
Alex Scoular sacrifice fly.
Harmon, a freshman, had the best game of his young career, finishing with two hits while also scoring two runs.
The Tigers got a run back in the eighth but Midway still held a 7-3 lead going into the bottom of the ninth.
Things turned immediately, however, as back-to-back singles and a wild pitch moved two runners into scoring position. An infield flyout briefly curbed the momentum, but another RBI single by Henke made it 7-4.
Midway got one out away with a bases loaded fly out, only for the tying run to come around without Campbellsville recording another hit. Two walks made it 7-6 before Anthony Esposito scored on a wild pitch.
Late-game struggles have haunted Midway as of late, as Wednesday marked the third time in a stretch of five games the Eagles have lost a lead in the ninth inning.
Sadly, the 10th inning looked much like the ninth. After a leadoff strikeout, Midway pitchers proceeded to walk the next four batters, the last of which produced a game-winning RBI for Joaquin Hernandez.
Bradey LaGreca had two hits, an RBI and a run scored while
Grant Stone also had a two-run single in the third inning.
The loss drops the Eagles to 20-12 on the season leading up to a potentially critical three-game River States Conference series against Shawnee State this weekend. The Bears are currently tied for second in the RSC at 11-4, while the Eagles are tied for fifth at 9-6.Â
The series, which has been shuffled around due to weather concerns, will begin with a doubleheader Friday, game one beginning at noon.
