MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway played three tight set but was unable to finish in any of them in a 25-21, 25-22, 26-24 loss to Cumberland (Tenn.) in a River States Conference match Wednesday.
The Eagles didn't lead in either of the first two sets, but seemed to find a momentum boost after fighting off six-consecutive set points in set two.
Down 24-16, the Phoenix struggled with the serve of Midway's
Tyler Goldfine, as six consecutive errors got the Eagles within 24-22 before a Mason Bryan kill finally ended the set for Cumberland.
That momentum appeared to carry over into set three, as after going on a 9-2 run, Midway took a 23-18 lead on a Goldfine ace.
But struggles to close that have plagued the Eagles all season were an issue again, as the Phoenix proceeded to score the next five points to take a 24-23 lead off an attack error.
The Eagles fended off match point on a
JT Kimball kill, but Cumberland answered with consecutive kills by Bryan and Joao Infante to clinch the sweep.
Kimball had 11 kills with
Jordan Daily and
Noah Fichter recording 14 and 12 assists respectively for the Eagles, who are 2-21 overall with an 0-11 mark in the RSC.
Midway has two road matches against ranked opponents this weekend, starting with a 6 p.m. meeting with No. 5 Campbellsville on Friday.
