Eagles drop pair of one run decisions to RedStorm

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- After coming from behind to win the series opener Friday, the Midway baseball team wrapped up its series with Rio Grande (Ohio) on Saturday with a doubleheader at Bob Evans Field.

In both games of the doubleheader, the Eagles held late leads but saw Rio Grande rally to win each contest and clinch the series with a 3-2 victory in game one and a 4-3 win in the finale.

Following the weekend, the Eagles fall to 24-15 overall and 13-8 in River States Conference play.

GAME ONE: Rio Grande 3, Midway 2

Rio Grande (25-17, 9-12 RSC) grabbed an early 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the third, but Midway pulled ahead with runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

Taylor Voorhees delivered an RBI single in the sixth to tie the game before Alex Scoular gave Midway the lead in the seventh. Scoular, who appeared in 137 games with the RedStorm from 2022–25, clubbed his fifth home run of the season with a solo shot to right field.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the RedStorm tied the game in the bottom of the seventh before taking a 3-2 lead in the eighth. Midway put a runner on base in the ninth, but a 4-6-3 double play clinched the victory for the home team.

Tyler Pyles turned in a solid start and left with the lead but was dealt a no-decision. He pitched six innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts. Grant Stone took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits with two walks over 1.2 innings.

GAME TWO: Rio Grande 4, Midway 3

Voorhees got the Eagles on the board in the first with a sacrifice fly, but Rio Grande answered with a run in the bottom half to tie the game at 1-1. Midway responded with runs in the second and third to take a 3-1 lead.

In the second inning, Logan Janiszewski hit an RBI double, and Noah Atherholt added an RBI groundout in the third. The Eagles had chances to add to their lead early but left five runners on base over the first three innings.

Midway's 3-1 lead held until the fifth, when Rio Grande tied the game before adding another run in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. The Eagles put a pair of runners on in the seventh, but the RedStorm escaped the jam to secure the victory.

Nathan McKissick pitched a complete game and was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs — three earned — on nine hits.
