WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- For the second time in a week, the Midway baseball team faced nationally ranked Cumberlands (Ky.) on Tuesday in a midweek matchup.
The Patriots, currently ranked No. 8 in the NAIA Coaches Poll, put together multiple big innings en route to a 16-4 run-rule victory.
After Midway retired the Patriots in order in the first inning, the home team responded in the second, scoring seven runs on three hits. The inning featured a grand slam by Zamaurion Hatcher and a three-run home run by Ronald Almanzar.
Midway, which falls to 24-16 overall with the loss, answered in the third, scoring three runs on four hits.
Luis Sanchez opened the inning with a solo home run — the first of his career.
Later in the inning,
Taylor Voorhees stepped to the plate with two outs and a runner on second. The junior clubbed his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left, cutting the deficit to 7-3.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, the Patriots continued to add on, scoring three runs in the third, four in the fourth, and two in the sixth to secure the 16-4 run-rule victory.
The Eagles are set to return to action this weekend when they host IU Southeast (Ind.) in what has been tabbed the River States Conference Series of the Week.
