MIDWAY, Ky. - After falling 10-2 in the first game of doubleheader Saturday, Midway softball rallied to force extra innings, only to lose by the final of 8-7 in eight innings to River States Conference opponent Shawnee State.
GAME ONE: SSU 10, MIDWAY 2
The Bears held a 16-6 hit advantage over a Midway team that also hurt itself with four fielding errors, which resulted in four Shawnee State runs being unearned.
Randi Delong reached base three times and had an RBI single in the third inning, while
Payton Baum drove in a run with a fourth-inning double.
GAME TWO: SSU 8, MIDWAY 7 (8 INNINGS)
Things looked grim when the Eagles fell behind 5-1 going into the sixth. But things turned when a one-out
Molly Wooldridge fly ball turned into a double after two Bear defenders collided.
The deficit was cut to 5-2 on a
Rhealee Ellis sacrifice fly before the next three batters recorded singles.
Peyton Henderson drove in a run to make it 5-3 then Jayden Teimmermans delivered a two-run single to tie the game.
Shawnee State re-took the lead on a Sydney Skiver sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, only for Midway slugger
Randi Delong to tie it again with a monstrous home run to left field.
That was an RSC-best 10th homer of the season for Delong who hit .625 with eight RBIs in six games this week. Saturday also marked the fifth time in Midway's last 14 games where she had either a tying or go-ahead RBI in the sixth inning or later.
Things weren't meant to be on Saturday, unfortunately, as Emily Moore led off the top of the eighth with a double before scoring on a single by Jenna Christopher. Henderson got aboard with a single, her third hit of the game, in the bottom half but was ultimately stranded at first.
The Eagles fall to 9-27 on the season with an 8-20 record in conference play. They're back at home for a non-conference doubleheader against Georgetown Tuesday, with game one beginning at 2 p.m.
