MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway broke a seven-game losing streak in game two of a doubleheader, riding a compete game performance by
Breanna Beach for a non-conference softball split with Georgetown Tuesday.
The Eagles put the tying run to the plate in the seventh but couldn't complete the comeback in a 5-3 loss in the opener, before Beach left the tying run on third base and held the Tigers scoreless over the final six innings of game two, a 2-1 Eagle win.
GAME ONE: GEORGETOWN 5, MIDWAY 3
Midway held a 2-1 lead after three innings behind RBI doubles by
Molly Wooldridge and
Randi Delong in the first and third respectively, only for the Tigers to score four unanswered runs to take a 5-2 lead into the seventh.
Things got interesting in the final half inning, when Karrington Briscoe led off with a double then, with two outs, came home to score on the second RBI double of the game by Wooldridge, who finished 3-for-4.
But Georgetown's Kylie Miller, who had three hits at the plate and nine strikeouts in the pitching circle, prevented further damage, forcing a game-ending popout to herself.
GAME TWO: MIDWAY 2, GEORGETOWN 1
An Eagle error led to a Tiger run in the top of the first, only for Delong to answer in the bottom of the inning with her River States Conference-best 11th home run of the season.
Delong is currently on a 15-game hitting streak and has reached safely in 17-consecutive games.
Midway then took a 2-1 lead lead in the second inning on a two-out RBI single by
Rhealee Ellis, a lead that would hold the rest of the game.
Despite having just one strikeout, Beach consistently served up easily balls for her defense, as the Eagles managed to hold off a last-inning Georgetown rally attempt.
Ainsley Herron led off the seventh with a walk before being moved over to second with a sacrifice bunt. This brought up Miller, who had two more hits in game two.
And though she made good contact, her ground ball found its way to shortstop
Madison Hill, who threw her out for the second out. Hill then ended the game by chasing down a Michalee Clay pop fly just in front of the third base foul line.
Peyton Henderson and
Alli Jones both had two hits for Midway, with Jones scoring on Ellis' second-inning single.
The win halted a seven-game losing streak both on the season and against the Tigers, who hadn't lost to Midway since March 15, 2022.
Midway (10-28) is home for a pair of River States Conference series this weekend, starting with a Friday tilt against Indiana Columbus beginning at 1 p.m.
