MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway softball honored soon-to-be departing seniors
Breanna Beach,
Athena Grimley and
Payton Baum during a senior day doubleheader against River States Conference foe Indiana Columbus Saturday.
The games didn't go the Eagles' way, unfortunately, as they were no-hit in a 2-0 loss in the opener, then were unable to complete a comeback in game two, an 8-6 loss.
GAME ONE: IU COLUMBUS 2, MIDWAY 0
Both teams were hitless through four innings, with Beach and Crimson Pride starter Chloe Linn locked in a great battle.
Though IUC did get a pair of hits in a two-run fifth inning, both of their runs came directly off of Midway errors, as the Eagles committed three in the inning and four in the game.
Beach only surrendered four hits in a complete-game effort and didn't allow a single earned run in 14 innings of work this week.
But the offense had no answer for Linn, who struck out seven while allowing just two base runners, both on walks.
GAME TWO: IU COLUMBUS 8, MIDWAY 6
Madison Hill immediately ended the hitless struggles by singling on the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning, but Midway still found itself in a 3-0 hole before one swing of the bat by
Ella Baum in the third inning.
With the bases loaded, the youngest Baum sent a towering shot over the wall in left field for a grand slam and a 4-3 Eagle lead.
The teams would go back-and-forth from there, with IUC going back up 5-4 on a two-run Mackenzie Matern single in the top of the fourth before Hill, who had three hits for the game, responded with an RBI single of her own to tie the game in the bottom half.
The Crimson Pride retook the lead on a Carli Hosler RBI in the fifth then got some breathing room on a two-run double by Jazlynn Steward in the top of the seventh to make it 8-5.
Midway made things interesting in the final at-bat, as a leadoff
Randi Delong double eventually led to an RBI
Molly Wooldridge single.
Ella Baum them singled with out out to bring the winning run to the plate, only for Matern to come in to pitch and end the game by forcing back-to-back flyouts to centerfield.
Now 10-30 with an 8-22 conference record, Midway has seven games to close the regular season next week, starting with a single, non-conference game at Georgetown Monday at 6 p.m.
