BECKLEY, W.Va. -- The Midway baseball team clinched a spot in the River States Conference Tournament on Thursday afternoon, opening its three-game series with a 16-0 run-rule victory over WVU Tech.
The Eagles jumped on the board early as
Pedro Morales led off the game with a solo home run, setting the tone for the afternoon.
Midway broke the game open with four runs in the third inning and five more in the fourth to build a commanding lead. The Eagles added six runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Morales paced the offense with three hits and four runs scored, while
Noah Atherholt added two hits and an RBI.
Taylor Voorhees drove in four runs, highlighted by a three-run home run in the sixth, and
Max Jewusiak added two hits and four RBIs.
Luis Sanchez chipped in with two hits and two RBIs off the bench.
On the mound,
Tyler Pyles was dominant, tossing six scoreless innings while allowing just three hits and striking out five. With the win, Pyles improves to 8-0 on the season, tying the program record for wins in a single season.
Carter Ross worked the seventh inning to complete the shutout as Midway limited WVU Tech to just three hits in the run-rule victory.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 26-19 overall and 14-11 in league play.
The Eagles and Golden Bears will conclude their series Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. ET.
