MIDWAY, Ky. -- Coming off a series sweep of Shawnee State (Ohio) over the weekend, the Midway baseball team stepped out of conference play to host nationally ranked Cumberlands (Ky.) at Tracy Farmer–Don Ball Stadium.
The Patriots — who entered the day with one of the top offenses in the NAIA — clubbed six extra-base hits en route to an 11-6 victory.
The Eagles struck first with a run in the opening inning off an RBI double by
Colt Whaley, but Cumberlands answered with six runs on five hits in the second to take a 6-1 lead.
After watching the visitors send 10 batters to the plate in the top of the second, Midway responded by sending 10 hitters to the plate in the bottom half. The Eagles plated four runs on four hits in the inning.
The first run scored on an error before Whaley added a two-run single, and
Mahrlon Torres followed with an RBI single through the right side to cut the deficit to 6-5.
The Patriots (30-6) added two runs in both the sixth and eighth innings before tacking on an insurance run in the ninth to secure the win.
Midway had numerous opportunities throughout the contest, finishing with 14 runners left on base. The Eagles stranded the bases loaded in the second, sixth, and eighth innings, while leaving two more aboard in the fifth.
Whaley and Torres led the way offensively, combining for six of Midway's 11 hits. Whaley went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, while Torres finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Logan Janiszewski, who began the game as a courtesy runner before later entering as the designated hitter, went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Midway falls to 23-13 overall and is scheduled to return to River States Conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Rio Grande (Ohio) on Friday and Saturday.
