YPSILANTI, Mich. -- What was supposed to be the opening round of the NAIA Women's Golf National Championship quickly turned into a waiting game Tuesday as inclement weather wreaked havoc at Eagle Crest Golf Club.
Just as the morning wave of teams began play, the sound of horns echoed across the course, signaling a weather delay. Golfers were pulled from the course around 8:45 a.m. ET and did not resume play until 11 a.m.
Midway was originally scheduled to tee off at 12:30 p.m., but the more than two-hour delay pushed the Eagles' starting times back to 2 p.m.
Kelsay Collins and
Anna New were the only Midway golfers able to begin their rounds before play was halted for a second time due to additional inclement weather in the area.
Collins completed her opening hole with a bogey on No. 1, while New was left with a par putt on the green at No. 1 when play was suspended.
Unfortunately, the afternoon weather forced officials to suspend play for the remainder of the day, preventing the completion of the opening round.
Due to the delays, the championship has been shortened to a 54-hole event. Teams will finish the opening round when play resumes Wednesday morning, with the second round scheduled for Thursday.
Following 36 holes of competition, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and ties, along with the top six individuals and ties not on an advancing team, for Friday's final round.
Midway's opening round will resume Wednesday morning beginning at 9 a.m. Collins will restart on hole No. 2, while New will return to the No. 1 green to attempt her par putt.
The remainder of the Eagles' lineup will begin their championships rounds shortly after.
Anna Simpson is scheduled to tee off at 9:10 a.m. in her national championship debut, followed by
Savannah Salchli at 9:20 a.m. and
Kasey Cameron at 9:30 a.m.
