BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Midway women's volleyball hits the road for the first time in nearly two weeks Wednesday as the Eagles travel to Barbourville, Kentucky, for a non-conference matchup against Union Commonwealth.
First serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
Wednesday will be Midway's first match away from Marshall Gymnasium since Sept. 4, when the Eagles split a pair of matches at the Racer Rumble in Lima, Ohio. Midway swept Wright State-Lake before falling to Northwestern Ohio later that afternoon.
The Eagles enter Wednesday at 2-11 after a two-match homestand that included contests against Campbellsville and Brescia. Now back on the road, Midway will look to recreate some of the offensive success it found the last time it picked up a victory.
Against Wright State-Lake, the Eagles put together their most efficient offensive performance of the season, finishing with 46 kills and just 14 errors on 109 attempts for a .294 hitting percentage. Mayson Delong led the charge with 11 kills and just one error on 13 attempts, good for a .769 hitting percentage. Nyla Gaines added eight kills without an error while hitting .615.
Midway has also shown an ability to manufacture momentum from the service line. The Eagles have recorded 77 aces through their first 46 sets, with Mayme Powell leading the way with 17. Marlee Laycock has added 14, while Lanie Cornelius and Aubry Kamholz have combined for another 21.
Powell has been asked to do more than serve. She leads the Eagles with 205 assists while Peyton Osteen has contributed 154, giving Midway two options to direct the offense. Powell has also recorded 80 digs, while Osteen has added 49.
At the net, Morgan Broderick and Delong have provided another area for Midway to attack the matchup. Broderick leads the Eagles with 20 total blocks, including seven solo, while Delong has 19 total blocks and a team-high nine solo stops.
Wednesday's opponent presents a matchup that, statistically, is much closer than the teams' records might suggest.
Union enters the week at 3-6 overall and 1-0 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play. The Bulldogs have faced two opponents that Midway has also seen this season, defeating Georgetown 3-1 and falling to Lawrence Tech 3-1. Union is scheduled to face Campbellsville on Tuesday before welcoming the Eagles to Barbourville the following night.
There is little separating the two attacks. Midway averages 9.91 kills per set and hits .111, while Union averages 10.00 kills per set with a .116 hitting percentage. The Bulldogs hold a larger advantage in the back row, averaging 16.36 digs per set compared to 14.13 for the Eagles.
Jersey Glass has been Union's biggest two-way threat. The senior leads the Bulldogs with 77 kills and averages 2.33 kills per set while also sitting second on the team with 118 digs. Glass has added 18 total blocks.
Sloan Coursey gives the Bulldogs another option offensively, recording 61 kills while leading the team with 145 assists. Defensively, Aracely Nunez has controlled the back row with 145 digs and an average of 4.39 per set, while Charlotte Juettner leads Union at the net with 20 total blocks.
Wednesday also renews a matchup that has been dormant for a decade. The programs have met just once previously, with Union earning a straight-set victory on Sept. 15, 2016. This year's meeting comes 10 years and one day later.
With the two sides separated by just .09 kills per set and five points in hitting percentage, Midway will look to turn a closely matched battle on paper into its first road victory of the season.
