MIDWAY, Ky. — The Midway men's soccer team looks to continue its recent run of form Sunday afternoon when it welcomes Governors State to Midway Turf Field for a non-conference matchup.
Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
Midway enters the contest at 2-1-2 overall after picking up back-to-back victories over Transylvania and Bryan College. The Eagles have earned a result in each of their last three matches and have scored multiple goals in consecutive contests. Sunday will mark the first meeting between Midway and Governors State.
Eagles Finding Their Form
After opening the season with a 1-1 draw at Georgetown and suffering a loss to Saint Francis (Ind.), the Eagles have responded with three consecutive results.
Midway battled Cleary to a 1-1 draw before returning home and earning a 2-1 victory over Transylvania. The Eagles followed that performance with a 3-2 win over Bryan on Friday afternoon to improve to 2-1-2.
The offense has begun to find its rhythm during the recent stretch. After scoring just two goals over their first three matches, the Eagles have scored five over their last two. Midway has scored seven goals this season, with six coming after halftime.
Saleh Ekuchi and Miles Ezell lead the Eagles with two goals apiece. Ekuchi has added two assists for a team-high six points, while Ezell has put five of his six shots on frame. Martin Escobar, Brayden Leger and George Spencer have each found the back of the net once.
Connor Vincent has started the last two contests in goal and enters Sunday unbeaten at 1-0-1. The senior has made nine saves while allowing three goals in 179:30 of action. Vincent also recorded his second career assist in Friday's victory over Bryan.
Scouting Governors State
Governors State enters Sunday's matchup with a 1-5-1 record. The Jaguars have scored three goals through seven matches while allowing 16. They have attempted 45 shots, putting 18 on frame, while their opponents have recorded 126 attempts and 54 shots on goal.
Three different Jaguars have found the back of the net this season. Diego Damian, Mohammad Deifallah and Lexani Gaines have each scored once, while Giovanne Arteaga and Alfonso Duran have recorded assists. Gaines leads Governors State with eight shots and six attempts on goal.
Brandon Gonzalez Ayala has handled the majority of the work in goal. He has started five matches, recording 18 saves with a .750 save percentage and a 1.33 goals-against average. He has also recorded the Jaguars' lone shutout of the season.
Governors State is led by first-year head coach Tony Gonzalez. Prior to joining the Jaguars, Gonzalez spent 25 seasons as the men's head coach at South Suburban College, compiling a 287-157-39 record. He was named NJCAA Region IV Coach of the Year in 2022 and 2026 and earned his USSF National "B" License in 2003.
First-Time Matchup
Sunday marks the first meeting between Midway and Governors State and concludes a stretch of three matches in six days for the Eagles.
Following Sunday's contest, Midway remains at home when it welcomes Cincinnati-Clermont to Midway Turf Field on Friday, Sept. 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
