MIDWAY, Ky. — After helping Midway sprint football improve to 2-0 on the season, Christian Carter and Hayden Cockrell have earned weekly honors from the Midwest Sprint Football League.
Carter was named the MSFL Offensive Player of the Week, while Cockrell earned Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the second consecutive week.
Carter helped lead an explosive Midway offense in the Eagles' 55-14 victory over Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon at Midway Turf Field. The Eagles finished the contest with 627 yards of total offense, including 397 through the air.
The Huntsville, Alabama, native completed 14-of-20 passes for a game-high 282 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception. Carter averaged 20.1 yards per completion as Midway built a 42-7 advantage by halftime.
Carter connected with Ayden Bauwens for a 38-yard touchdown with 8:43 remaining in the opening quarter, giving the Eagles a 14-0 advantage. He later found Chase Williams for a 14-yard score as Midway extended its lead to 35-7 late in the first quarter.
His third touchdown pass came early in the second quarter when he connected with Tanner Sullivan from four yards out, sending the Eagles into the break with a 42-7 lead.
Cockrell, meanwhile, continued his strong start to the season on special teams. He converted all five of his extra-point attempts against the Knights and handled six kickoffs for 247 yards, including one touchback.
The Winchester, Kentucky, native also punted once for 33 yards, placing the kick inside the Bellarmine 20-yard line.
The weekly honor is Cockrell's second in as many weeks. He earned the same award following Midway's season-opening 38-24 victory at Calumet, where he connected on a 26-yard field goal, made all three extra points and placed four of his six punts inside the 20-yard line.
Midway hits the road this weekend as the Eagles travel to Quincy for a Sunday kickoff. The Sunday matinee is scheduled for noon Eastern, 11 a.m. Central.
