Women's Tennis opens season with 9-0 sweep of KWC

Owensboro, Ky. -- Under the new leadership of first year head coach, Joe Reyes, the Midway women's tennis team opened their season with a bang on Saturday afternoon with a 9-0 sweep over Kentucky Wesleyan on the road.

"I'm really proud of the hard work the girls put in to get the win," noted Reyes. "The girls have been working hard in the preseason and it's nice to see their hard work paying off."

The Eagles (1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the match after a victory at No. 2 doubles. Erin Pigman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) and Kennedy Burch (Frankfort, Ky.) defeated Katie Laughlin and Amanda Gossett 8-0 to give the Eagles the lead.

After Elizabeth Toth (Algonquin, Ill.) and Diana Burkee (West Allis, Wis.) got a win by forfeit at No. 3 doubles, and Gabby Meis (Panama City, Panama) and Madison Chambers (Pennsville, N.J.) picked up a 9-7 victory at number one doubles, the Eagles would lead 3-0 heading into singles action.

Gabby Meis was right back in action in number one singles when she took on Elizabeth Clayton. The senior, picked up a win in straight sets over Clayton, 6-1, 6-1.

Erin Pigman continued her roll from doubles as she won 6-0, 6-0 over Katie Laughlin giving the Eagles a 5-0 advantage.

Freshman, Madison Chambers was forced to battle back at number three doubles after she dropped the first set 3-6. Chambers battled back and won the second set 6-2 and clinched the win with a 10-6 advantage in the tiebreaker.

Senior, Kennedy Burch and sophomore, Elizabeth Toth would roll in number four and five singles, respectively. Burch won 6-4, 6-3 over Eva Sampson, while Toth finished off Abby Meyer 6-1, 6-1.

The Panthers didn't have anyone to fill in at number six singles so Diana Burkee would win by forfeit giving the Eagles the 9-0 victory.

Midway will return to the courts on Monday when they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio for a match against Mount St. Joseph (Ohio).
