Midway, Ky – Both Midway Men and Women Tennis teams start off their 2026 season at the Georgetown Invitational on Saturday.
Head Coach Roscoe Moonieyan is excited for a new season, and the new and returning players he gets to work with.
"We have brought in a few new players who have added a level of depth and experience with us having a few transfers joining us this year," said Coach Moonieyan. "We are still fairly young with only a few seniors so it's good having a balance of younger as well as experienced players throughout our rosters now."
Last season, the women's team went 8-6 (5-1 RSC), which was enough to make the playoffs. They won their first game against Indiana University Southeast 5-1, clinching their spot in the RCS Championship Final. They were taken down by No. 25 Oakland City University 4-0.
Then men almost had a complete parallel season to them. They went 7-6 (4-1 RSC), also enough to make the playoffs. They won their first game against Brescia University (Ky.) 4-0, which also clinched their spot in the RCS Championship. They came up short as well, losing to No.19 Oakland City University 4-0.
Coach Moonieyan is excited about the team's synergy they've shown so far this year.
"Our team is filled with so many great personalities," he said, "and our team cohesion is great at the moment, so I am also very grateful for that."
Coach Moonieyan will be entering his second season of being head coach after being hired in May 2025.
"I am really enjoying going into my second year at Midway," said Coach Moonieyan. "...excited about the players we have this year too."
Manuel Mirabal will be a player to watch for the Eagles this season as the senior brings experience and leadership to the Midway lineup. The Maturin, Venezuela native has been a consistent contributor in both singles and doubles throughout his career. Mirabal recorded 11 combined singles and doubles victories in 2025 and continued to produce last season, including a straight-set singles victory in Midway's River States Conference opener against IU Southeast. With another year of experience under his belt, Mirabal will look to be a key veteran presence for the Eagles throughout the 2026-27 campaign.
Alicia Sanglas Sanglas will be a player to watch for the Eagles this season after a strong freshman campaign. The Vic, Barcelona, Spain native was named the River States Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2026 and established herself at the top of Midway's lineup, competing at No. 1 singles. Now entering her sophomore season, Sanglas Sanglas will look to build off that successful debut and continue to be a key piece of the Eagles' lineup.
