MIDWAY, Ky. -- The Midway University men's tennis team played their third match of the week on Saturday, March 3, when they hosted NCAA Division III foe, Transylvania (Ky.) at the Thomas R. Post Tennis Center.
Transylvania (1-2) would take a 2-1 lead into singles action after they won two of the three doubles matches. Midway (2-4) would only be able to muster up a victory in three of the six singles matches as the Pioneers came away with the 5-4 victory.
The team of Julian Lopez (Bogota, Colombia) and Hugo Retortillo (Leon, Spain) helped get the Eagles off to a strong start after they picked up an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Unfortunately for the home team, the Pioneers picked up an 8-5 win at No. 2 followed by an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 edge into singles competition.
Midway regained a 3-2 lead after Retortillo and Lopez won in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 1 singles. Retortillo defeated Dylan Moore by scores of 6-4 and 6-0, while Lopez won 6-1 and 6-1 over Luke Groene.
Transylvania would go on to win at No. 6, 4, and 3 singles as they clinched the match by winning five of the nine matches.
Even with the match wrapped up, the two teams still completed play at No. 5 singles. Jacob Franke (Eddyville, Ky.) won the first set 6-4, but dropped the second set 6-2 as the match moved to a tiebreaker. Franke would go on to win the tiebreaker 10-4 to win his match.
Midway will wrap up a busy first week when they travel to Danville, Ky. to take on Centre College at 10:30 a.m. ET on Sunday.
