MIDWAY, Ky. -- Both the Midway men's and women's tennis teams will open their 2026-27 seasons at the ITA Regionals in Owensboro, Kentucky, on Thursday.
Head coach Roscoe Moonieyan enters his second season at the helm of the Midway tennis programs after being hired in May 2025.
"I am really enjoying going into my second year at Midway," Moonieyan said. "...excited about the players we have this year too."
Last season, the women's team finished 8-6 overall and 5-1 in River States Conference play, earning a spot in the RSC Championship. The Eagles defeated Indiana University Southeast 5-1 in their opening match to clinch a spot in the RSC Championship Final. Their run ultimately came to an end with a 4-0 loss to No. 25 Oakland City University.
The men's team put together a similar campaign, finishing the season 7-6 overall and 4-1 in RSC play. Midway opened postseason play with a 4-0 victory over Brescia University (Ky.) to advance to the RSC Championship Final. The Eagles came up short in the title match, falling 4-0 to No. 19 Oakland City University.
Moonieyan is excited for another season and the mix of new and returning players on both rosters.
"We have brought in a few new players who have added a level of depth and experience with us having a few transfers joining us this year," Moonieyan said. "We are still fairly young with only a few seniors, so it's good having a balance of younger as well as experienced players throughout our rosters now."
Manuel Mirabal is a player to watch for the Eagles during the 2026-27 season. The senior brings experience and leadership to the Midway men's lineup after recording 11 combined singles and doubles victories during the 2025-26 campaign. His season included a straight-set singles victory in Midway's River States Conference opener against IU Southeast.
With another year of experience under his belt, Mirabal will look to provide a key veteran presence for the Eagles throughout the 2026-27 campaign.
On the women's side, Alicia Sanglas Sanglas will be a player to watch following a strong freshman campaign. The Vic, Barcelona, Spain, native was named the River States Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2026.
Sanglas Sanglas established herself at the top of Midway's lineup, competing at No. 1 singles during her freshman season. Now entering her sophomore campaign, she will look to build on her successful debut and continue to be a key piece of the Eagles' lineup.
