NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- After stepping out of league play earlier this week against Cumberlands (Ky.), the Midway University men's tennis team returned to River States Conference play on Friday, April 6, when they took on Indiana University Southeast in New Albany.
The Eagles were able to win a doubles match and a singles match, but IU Southeast would go on to win two of the three doubles matches and five of the six singles matches en route to the 7-2 victory.
After the Greandiers made quick work of the Eagles at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, the Eagles got on the board with a win at No. 1 doubles.
The duo of Julian Lopez (Bogota, Colombia) and Hugo Retortillo (Leon, Spain) got off to a quick start as they held on for the 8-6 win over the Grenadier duo of Brock Winchell and Daulton Fensler.
Lopez and Retortillo led Midway in singles play with strong performances at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Retortillo played well at No. 2 singles, but ended up falling to Brock Winchell by scores of 6-4 and 6-2.
Freshman, Julian Lopez then won Midway's final match at No. 1 singles in a highly contested matchup against Garrett Fensler. Lopez won the first set, 6-3, before Fensler battled back to win the second set 6-3. Lopez went on to win the third set 6-2 to win the match two sets to one.
Midway will return to action on Saturday, April 7, when they travel back to Indiana to take on Indiana University East at 3:45 p.m. ET.
