IU Southeast blanks Midway Women's Tennis

NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Midway University women's tennis team returned to River States Conference play on Friday, April 6, when they traveled across the Ohio River to New Albany, Indiana to take on Indiana University Southeast.

The Grenadiers won all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles play where they won all six matches en route to the 9-0 victory over the Eagles.

IU Southeast won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles to take the early 1-0 lead as it swelled to 3-0 following a pair of 8-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Gabby Meis (Panama City, Panama) and Erin Byassee (Paducah, Ky.) dropped an 8-2 decision at No. 1 doubles to Dana Frank and Tamerra Horton, while Annette Tran (Austin, Texas) and Jilian Verbrugghe (Macomb, Mich.) fell at No. 2 to Alezis Applegate and Camille Greenwell.

In singles play, Midway was led by the 1-2 punch of Tran and Meis. Tran nearly took the first set at No. 1 singles before falling by set scores of 7-6 and 6-3. Meis nearly won her match at No. 2 singles. Meis, unfortunately, ended up losing to Tamerra Horton by scores of 7-6 and 7-5.

The Grenadiers would go on to win the final four singles matches in straight sets to seal the 9-0 victory.

Midway returns to action on Saturday when they take on Indiana University East with first-serve set for 3:45 p.m. ET.
