ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Midway University men's tennis team opened up their Spring Break Trip on Monday when they battled Coe College (Iowa) at the Fort Gatlin Recreation Complex in Orlando, Florida.
The Kohawks – who are an NCAA Division III school out of Cedar Rapids, Iowa – swept all three doubles matches taking a 3-0 lead en route to the 6-3 victory over the Eagles.
The Eagles – who fell to 6-2 overall with the loss – fell 8-2 at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, but nearly squeaked out a victory at No. 2 doubles.
The team of David Alfaro (Cali, Colombia) and Hugo Retortillo (Leon, Spain) fell by a final score of 8-7 to the Kohawk team of Nate Ackert and Rami Hermaidan.
Falling behind 3-0, the Eagles began to comeback with a win from Alfaro at No. 2 singles. The sophomore won in straight sets – 6-1 and 6-2 – over Tyler Nelson.
Shortly after that victory, Steven Knowles (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) pulled the Eagles to within 3-2 after a win in straight sets at No. 6 singles. The sophomore won 6-1, 6-4 over Jack Cook.
The Kohawks (7-4) unfortunately went on to win at No. 4 and No. 3 singles to clinch the win.
The Eagles won their final match in three sets at No. 5 singles. Sebastian Hernandez, a junior from Bogota, Colombia, dominated the first set, 6-0, but Will Rizer won 6-3 in the second set to force a third set. Hernandez won the third set 7-6 to clinch the three-set victory.
Midway is back in action on Tuesday afternoon when they battle Concordia College Moorhead (Minn.) at the Fort Gatlin Recreation Complex in Orlando.
