Box Score MIDWAY, Ky. -- Coming off a dominant win over Carlow (Pa.) in their last outing, the Midway men's soccer team wrapped up the home portion of their schedule on Saturday when they hosted Point Park (Pa.) for Senior Day at the Midway Soccer Field.
Trailing 1-0 in the early going, the Eagles scored back-to-back goals within five minutes of one another to take a 2-1 lead. Point Park, however, scored five unanswered goals to end the game as they cruised to the 6-2 victory.
Prior to kickoff, Midway honored Evan Sakamaki (Floyds Knobs, Ind.), Thomas Sidebottom (Bardstown, Ky.), Austin Mefford (Frankfort, Ky.), Drew Blaydes (Midway, Ky.), and Daniel Caldwell (Owensboro, Ky.) for Senior Day.
The Pioneers – who improved to 7-7-1 overall and 3-4 in River States Conference play with the win – struck first scoring in the 14th minute to grab the early 1-0 lead.
The lead for the visitors, however, was short lived after Midway got their offense going. The Eagles – who fell to 7-6 overall and 3-5 in league play with the loss – scored goals in the 19th and 24th minutes to claim a 2-1 advantage.
The first of the two goals came from Unaiz Shajani (Nairobi, Kenya) who found the back of the net for the 18th time this season. The freshman made a great run after Evan Sakamaki played a perfect ball through the Pioneer defense as he slid his shot by the goalie from 15 yards out.
Sakamaki played a key role in Midway's second goal less than five minutes later. The fifth-year senior played a perfect ball over the Pioneer defense to streaking Will Sidebottom (Bardstown, Ky.) who had made a perfect run. The freshman then made a nifty move to evade the goalkeeper as he scored on an open net from about 10 yards out.
Midway's lead, however, was short lived after Point Park scored three times in the 28th, 37th and 43rd minutes to take a 4-2 lead at intermission. The visitors then added to their lead with goals in 65th and 82nd minutes to come away with the 6-2 victory.
Hunter Caudill (Winchester, Ky.) was dealt the loss for the Eagles as he stopped six of the 12 shots he faced. His counterpart, Andrew Russell, played 66:53 in goal and made one save, while Sean O'Hea stopped the only shot he faced.
Tim Wolz's squad is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday (Oct. 26) when they travel to Wilmore to battle Asbury (Ky.) at 7 p.m. ET.
