LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Following a pair of road matches to open their spring season, the Midway women's tennis team got to play their home opener on Friday (March 19) when they hosted Brescia (Ky.) at the Lexington Tennis Club.
Not only was the match Midway's home opener, but it also was their River States Conference opener as they opened league play on the right foot following a 6-1 win over the Bearcats on Friday in Lexington.
The Eagles – who improve to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in league play with the win – entered doubles play needing to win just one of the doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Brescia forfeited No. 3 doubles, while Midway won handily at No. 2 and No. 1.
The duo of Annette Tran (Austin, Texas) and Claire Smith (Lexington, Ky.) easily clinched the doubles point after blanking the Brescia duo of Hannah Joy Simms and Mazvita Ngorosha at No. 1 doubles winning 6-0.
The Eagles made it a clean sweep of the three doubles matches after the duo of Carly Poste (Henderson, Nev.) and Isabella McKinney (Paducah, Ky.) won at No. 2. Poste and McKinney won 6-1 over the Bearcat duo of Melony Dunaway and Camille Fleming.
The Blue and Gold inched closer to clinching the match after Chloe Terwiske (Dubois, Ind.) picked up a forfeit victory at No. 6 singles extending Midway's lead to 2-0.
Claire Smith pushed the lead to 3-0 following a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 over Mazvita Ngorosha, while the Bearcats got on the board when Hannah Joy Simms won in straight sets at No. 1.
Following Brescia's win at No. 1 singles, Midway dominated the remaining three singles matches before quickly clinching the victory. The first of those three victories came at No. 3 singles where Erin Byassee sealed the win.
The junior from Paducah, Ky. won in straight sets – 6-1 and 6-3 – over Melony Dunaway making the score 4-1.
Freshman, Grace Froedge (Louisville, Ky.) pushed Midway's lead to 5-1 following a 6-2, 6-2 win over Camille Fleming at No. 5 singles, while Carly Poste put the finishing touches on the 6-1 victory after winning 6-2, 6-1 over Sierra Thompson at No. 4 singles.
Joe Reyes' squad will now step out of league play on Saturday when they host Anderson (Ind.) in Frankfort, Ky. at the Frankfort Country Club beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET.
