HAMILTON, Ohio -- After dropping their first two River States Conference matches of the season, the Midway men's tennis team picked up their first conference victory of the year on Tuesday with a sweep of Ohio Christian.
The Eagles dropped just two games over the three doubles matches as they took a 1-0 lead into singles play after sweeping the three matches. They quickly clinched the match and won all six singles matches to claim the 7-0 sweep.
With the win, Adam Malik's team improves to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in league play, while Ohio Christian slips to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in RSC play.
The duo of Owen McCarter (White Bluff, Tenn.) and Lucas Gable (Pasco, Wash.) helped Midway get off to a strong start with a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
Midway quickly clinched the doubles point after German Collado (Alcala de Henares, Spain) and Travis True (Winchester, Ky.) won a 6-0 decision at No. 2, while the team of Spencer Counts (Krum, Texas) and Marcus Antonelli (Wellington, Fla.) made it a clean sweep with a 6-1 win at No. 1.
Singles play saw Owen McCarter and Travis True win in straight sets at No. 3 and No. 4 without dropping a game as Midway took a 3-0 lead. Fernando Salazar (Toluca, Mexico) then clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 over Ryan Batig.
Lucas Gable kept the winning going with an 8-0 victory over Davis Mack at No. 6, while German Collado and Paul Wamba (Dschang, Cameroon) each won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
The Eagles are now scheduled to return to action on Wednesday, March 30, when they host Pikeville (Ky.) at noon ET at the Midway Tennis Courts.
