CLEVELAND, Ohio -- After opening their season last weekend at the Pepsi Patriot Open, the Midway wrestling team was back at it on Sunday when they traveled to Cleveland, Ohio for the Bob Del Rosa Ohio Open.
In an open tournament that featured numerous top teams from the NCAA Division II and Division III ranks, the Eagles had a pair of grapplers place, while three others fell just a couple of rounds short of placing.
Byron Pierce and Jabril Williams picked up two and three wins, respectively, to post a pair of sixth place finishes within their weight classes.
Pierce, who is ranked No. 15 in the NAIA at heavyweight, opened his tournament with a second period fall before dropping to the consolation bracket with his first loss. He then advanced to the fifth-place bout following a decision and major decision victory. His run ultimately came to an end following a narrow 2-1 defeat to Sam Sorenson (Army Prep).
Williams, meanwhile, was forced to battle back in the consolation bracket after dropping his opening match to Guy Deleonardis (Glenville State). Williams then won by fall in the second period and picked up a 4-1 decision victory to move to the fifth-place match. He would finish in sixth following an 8-1 defeat to Shane Bates of Indianapolis.
Meanwhile, in the freshman/sophomore division, the trio of Aaron Garcia (285), Michael Colligan (174), and Chris Begley (149) nearly placed in their respective weight classes.
Garcia, who placed at the Pepsi Patriot Open last week, and Colligan each went 2-2 to finish within one round of placing, while Begley also went 2-2 to finish within a couple of rounds of placing.
Midway is now set to open the dual portion of their schedule on Wednesday (Nov. 15) when they battle Montevallo (Ala.).
