MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- Following a solid showing in Cleveland, Ohio, a couple of days prior, the Midway wrestling team was back in action on Wednesday night when they battled Montevallo (Ala.) in their dual opener of the 2023-24 season.
The Eagles would take a 13-11 lead at the midway point of the match, but the Falcons won four of the final five matches en route to the 27-16 victory.
Montevallo picked up a tech fall victory at 125 and a forfeit victory at 133 to take an 11-0 lead into the 141-pound weight class. Midway then rattled off three consecutive victories to claim their first lead of the contest.
Kyler Adams picked up a major decision victory at 141 over Chad Strickland, while Christopher Sperin recorded a late takedown to notch a 9-8 decision victory over Trent Gilham at 149.
Midway's rally then culminated at 157, where Abe Hafez pinned Finley Jameson just 45 seconds into the match giving the Eagles a 13-11 lead heading into the final five weight classes.
Unfortunately for the Blue and Gold, the Falcons won the next four weight classes before Byron Pierce picked up a 4-0 decision victory over Noah Todd at heavyweight to make the final score 27-16.
Midway is set to return to action on Saturday when they compete in the Life Open in Marietta, Georgia.
