Smith leads all River States runners at Cross Country Nationals

VANCOUVER, Wash. - Trinity Smith ended her record-breaking season on a high note at the NAIA Women's Cross Country National Championships.

Smith climbed 148 spots in the standings from the 1K mark to the finish line, finishing 110th overall with a final time of 23:40.4 in the 6K race on Friday afternoon.

The junior from Florence, Ky. got off to a slow start, finding herself in 258th place one kilometer in, but made steady improvements at each proceeding kilometer. She climbed to 207th at the 2K mark before rising to 151st, 126th, 112th, then her final position at 110th.

Smith, who finished third in 23:44.4 at the River States Championships two weeks ago, had the top finish of anyone in the RSC on Friday. She also came just 2.1 seconds shy of equalling her own 6K program record, which she set at the Angel Mounds Invitational on Oct. 13
