POWDER SPRINGS, Ga. -- After competing in their first dual of the season earlier in the week, the Midway wrestling team returned to the mat on Saturday when they competed in the Life U Open in Powder Springs, Georgia.
Although the Eagles didn't have any placers, they still had a number of wrestlers pick up at least two wins amongst a stacked field that featured multiple top ranked teams in the NAIA.
Aaron Garcia, a true freshman from Dacula, Ga., had the strongest showing for the Eagles as he fell just a couple of rounds short of placing at heavyweight. He received a bye to open the tournament and then advanced to the third round following a major decision victory over Daunte Bond of St. Andrews.
He then suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Jayln McClammy of Mount Olive before rattling off back-to-back wins over Steven Flagg and Adam Honis. Garcia's run unfortunately came to an end following a loss to Wilkinson Saul.
Midway then had four others that posted a 2-2 mark at their respective weight class. Nolan Jones did so at 141 and Christopher Sperin did at 149, while the duo of David Emfinger and Trace Insalaco each went 2-2 at 197.
The Eagles are set to return to action on Dec. 1-2 when they travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. For the Blithe Memorial Duals hosted by Cornerstone (Mich.).
