WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. -- The Midway wrestling team opened year two of the Kenny Mason era on Saturday when they traveled to Williamsburg, Ky. for the Pepsi Patriot Open hosted by the University of the Cumberlands
It was a bit of an up-and-down day for the Blue and Gold as they had two wrestlers place while several others picked up at least two victories.
Aaron Garcia and Anthony Caruso were the lone placers for the Blue and Gold. Garcia took fifth in the freshman/sophomore division at heavyweight, while Caruso took sixth at 133 in the open division.
Garcia opened with a bye before picking up a pair of falls to advance to the semifinals. He then suffered back-to-back losses but bounced back with a major decision over Tevin Person (Brewton-Parker) in the fifth-place match.
Caruso, who is ranked No. 20 in the NAIA at 133, opened with a bye before picking up a pair of victories by decision and tiebreaker. A major decision defeat dropped him to the consolation bracket where he would finish in sixth.
The duo of Chris Begley and Michael Colligan each had a solid showing in the freshman/sophomore division. Begley made a run to the semifinals and went 3-2 at 149, while Colligan made a run in the consolation bracket, going 3-2 at 174.
Within the open division, Chris Sperin led the way, carding a 4-2 record. He lost via major decision in his opening match, but got hot in the consolation bracket, rattling off four consecutive victories. He day, unfortunately, came to an end following a loss to Zac Cowan.
Midway then had three wrestlers that went 2-2, including Kyler Adams (141), Kaleb Clark (149), and Jabril Williams (165).
The Eagles are set to return to action on Sunday (Nov. 12) when they travel to Cleveland, Ohio for the Bob Del Rosa Ohio Open.
