HARROGATE, Tenn. – As the weather begins to get warmer it is time for the collegiate tennis season to begin. The Midway men's tennis team opened its season with a pair of duals in the Music City before travelling to Harrogate, Tenn. for a match with Lincoln Memorial.
The Eagles started their season with a 4-3 loss to Tennessee Southern before completing a 7-0 sweep over Bethel (Tenn.). Midway then visited Harrogate, Tennessee where it took a 7-0 loss to Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.).
Against Tennessee Southern, the Eagles earned a 6-3 win from Aditya Roy (Kolkata, India) and Julian Lopez (Bogota, Colombia) at No.1 doubles but the Firehawks took the other two matches to claim the doubles point.
In singles play, Roy soared to a straight-set win (6-1, 6-2) at the No. 1 position while Daniele Trentin (Venice, Italy) did the same at No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-3). The Eagles also saw Paul Wamba (Dschang, Cameroon) come from behind to earn a three-set victory at No. 3 singles (4-6, 6-3, 10-7).
Against Bethel, Roy and Lakshay Vivek (Haryana, India) won at No. 1 doubles (6-2) and the pairing of Trentin and Izan Casado (Leon, Spain) clinched the point with a 6-2 win. In singles play, Roy (6-1, 6-3), Wamba (6-4, 6-3) and Trentin (6-4, 6-1) all earned straight-set victories. Vivek picked up a straight-set win at No. 5 singles (6-4, 6-1) and Owen McCarter (White Bluff, Tenn.) did the same (6-2, 6-2) at the No. 6 slot. In the remaining singles match, German Collado (Alcala de Henares, Spain) won in three sets (7-5, 2-6, 11-9).
Against Lincoln Memorial, the Eagles fell to the Rail Splitters 6-1. The Blue and Gold picked up their only win at No. 6 singles where Trentin outlasted his opponent in a three-set match (6-2, 3-6, 10-7).
