HARROGATE, Tenn. – Over the past ten days, the Midway women's tennis team opened its season with a quartet of dual matches. While the Eagles dropped their first three matches by 5-2 scores before falling 7-0 to Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.), the duo of Agustina Olivero (Montevideo, Uruguay) and Mara Guillen (Madrid, Spain) won their first three matches in doubles play at the No. 1 position and Guillen is undefeated in singles play.
Against Centre (Ky.), Olivero and Guillen earned an 8-2 win in the number one slot. In a match against Bethel (Tenn.) they picked up a 7-5 victory and against Tennessee Southern they recorded a dominant 6-0 win.
In the Centre dual, Olivero earned a win in straight sets (7-5, 6-0) at the No. 1 position while Guillen also claimed a straight-set victory (7-5, 6-2) at No. 2 singles. Against Bethel, Olivero picked up a straight-set win (6-3, 7-5).
In the match with Tennessee Southern, Olivero was forced to a third set before picking up a hard-fought win (6-2, 0-6, 11-9). Guillen was also forced to three sets but picked up the win (6-4, 4-6, 10-8).
Against Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.), the duo of Olivero and Guillen forced a tiebreak before suffering a 7-6 (4) loss. In singles play, Olivero rallied from a set down to tie the match before losing in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 10-8) to Rosalie Carrier-Dulac.
The Blue and Gold will return to action on Saturday, March 4 when it will face off with Cumberlands (Ky.). Opening serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Williamsburg, Ky.
